Captain Jonathan Rome SD 11505.31

Jonathan smiled, and it felt like for the first time in ages. According to the reports Thalev had recently arrived at Kobliad....he could barely believe it. He entered his quarters and headed straight for the liquor cabinet, picking up the bottle he had reserved for this reunion weeks earlier when he first received his message.

He placed the bottle on his desk and decided a quick change of clothes would be in order. He had been butting in down in Engineering all day to oversee the installation of his new QSD and while the smell of lubricant and grime made him feel ten years younger, he somehow wanted to present himself to his best friend.

He threw off the uniform and placed it in the recycler before taking a short water shower...the perks of command, real hot water to rinse out the dirt in his beard and the stench....if he had the time he would have poured a bath to soothe his aches but the scotch would take care of that. Minutes later he picked out a pair of khakis and a high collar shirt. "Computer, please locate Captain Thalev Idrani".

"Thalev Idrani is currently onboard the USS Bremen, deck 1. Captain's Ready room"

Jonathan's smile faded...he had forgotten all about Sara. Of course he was with her....if he could see Eva again he would go straight to her and never leave. "How long has he been there?"

"Thirty six minutes and 14 seconds"

Jonathan nodded to himself and walked over to the desk and picked up the bottle and poured himself a drink before sitting down, staring at the pile of PADDs before him. He might as well prepare for the upcoming battle....that's where he needed to focus his attention anyway....he could enjoy himself when this was done. When the Gators were forced back to their own part of the quadrant.

He picked up the first PADD. Casualty reports from the rescue mission.....seemed like they never got easier, but recently it had started to feel natural to him to write to their families.....he sipped off the scotch and let out a long sigh. "Computer, begin recording.....Dear Mr. and Mrs. King..."

Great log, Einar. I'm really enjoying Rome's moods since Idrani turned up again.
And this was a very sweet log. Loved it.

"All hands, fall back to safe areas. We are venting the outer sections in three minutes."

Jonathan called over the shipwide comm. The forcefields were failing so that meant getting everyone past the safety zone so the hatches could drop, cutting the outer section off from the rest of the module.

Three minutes.....that gave them ample time, didn't it? The MACOs would hold the line until all Starfleet personnel were safe.. He looked over his shoulder at Danann who was tapping furiously away at her console. "Commander, I need those forcefields to stay up no matter what. Do what you have to!"

He turned his attention back to the viewscreen and grabbed the railing as the module swerved to avoid a volley of plasma torpedoes that came streaming their way. If the Gators managed to overrun the MACOs, the security officers would undoubtedly fail to stop them..

"Keep firing!"

He turned to face the back of the Bridge "Ensign Douglas, go down there and make sure everyone is secure. Hold the line."

Jonathan watched the 12 second loop on repeat, the final moments of his crew on the ventral module. "Evasive maneuvers! Bring those shie--" then static.

Jonathan grabbed the bottle of scotch originally planned for his reunion with Thalev and poured himself a stiff drink. Commander Lilah Morgan had recently passed her command examination and had been his first pick for command. And now she and her wife were both dead. And it was because of him. "Computer stop playback"

The screen went dead and got replaced by the Starfleet emblem. Something that had filled his chest with pride for decades but now felt like a bitter memory of what was.

He grabbed his glass and took a large sip of the whiskey while he stared out the window at the fleet of starships around, almost all showing signs of damage. Today a lot of good people died....His luck had run out. And he had taken the taskforce down with him.

They had another 8 hours before heading back in, but there was no time to sleep. Danann was just getting back to her feet and Engineering had a lot of work to get the two modules back together. This time they would stick together. "Computer, list all the deceased by name...and replicate me Starfleet issue paper and pen"
