OPS Ensign Elijah Stark

UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANETS

USS HYPERION: NCC-77989

Stardate: 11505.18

Ensign Elijah Stark - OPS U.S.S. HYPERION

Eli monitored the dead silent COMM, continuing to send the captains coded transmission and getting back nothing but silence. He glanced up at the CON, Rome sat, leaning slightly forward as the stars streaked past on the view screen. He looked every bit as haggard as the crew seemed to think he was, almost desperate for the hours that remained to tick away and bring them to the Bremen's last known location.

Eli turned his attention back to the other panel he had monitoring the rest of the chatter in the quadrant. With the task force divided, this was the perfect time for the Tzenkethi to take advantage and launch a counter offensive and despite the apparent retreat of the Breen, the situation was far from ideal. He updated the information on the divided task force and any other pertinent information and sent it to the CTO and XO.

24 hours in and he'd had ample time to assess his first day, much to his disgust. His intention had been to present himself as a solid new officer, ready for anything. Instead, he had stumbled over himself like an overwhelmed schoolboy. Just thinking about the last day made him want to vomit with disappointment. No doubt the Captain and rest of the command staff thought he was inept, or at the very least painfully green. He shook his head and sighed to himself, he had a lot of damage control to do if he wanted to change that perception.

With a little luck, something positive about the Bremen might be a good start.

As the Hyperion divided into its attack configuration, Eli realized his heart was pounding. He closed his eyes for a moment, taking a few deep breaths trying to slow his bounding pulse. Regardless of how much training they had put them through, he had always believed there was no way to simulate real combat. Now, as the task force moved into position alongside and facing the oncoming Tzenkethi fleet, he hated being right.

Eli turned his attention back to his near screaming console as the fleet began reporting in, eager for action and formation orders. He swallowed his fear and focused on his work, hoping the distraction would alleviate some of his anxiety. To his relief he began to feel his pulse slow, not only because of the busy work, but the calming tone of the command crew.

The Captain and XO called out orders, forceful and clear, but calm, deliberate. They responded and reacted with the assured demeanor that only came from experience, and their confidence translated to the rest of the crew around them. Eli felt a little silly, but he really could almost feel their determination and focus radiate and move through the bridge, setting himself and most likely others more at ease.

Nodding to himself, Eli turned his attention back to the closing enemy fleet, preparing for the oncoming storm.

Eli leaned on the bar, his back to the crowd as he nursed yet another drink. As he gently rocked the whiskey around the glass, his mind wandered back to the events of the last few days. He had been a member of the Hyperion crew for less than a week, and he had already seen his first combat, something he hadn’t considered even remotely possible. Days later, he still found himself troubled, by the act itself and how it had affected him.

Casualties on the Federation side had been blessedly light, all things considered, but there had still been losses to both factions. It had taken a bit of time to sink in, but the loss of life had been jarring. Conflict was inevitable, there was always someone in the galaxy with designs of a violent nature, but now it seemed much closer and likely than it had when he’d joined Starfleet. The ideals of the Federation were that of diplomacy over conflict, but more and more, it seemed lately that those ideals were eroding. The old call for peace now found itself stifled by a louder, more visceral call to arms.

Eli frowned at the thought, memories of the last argument with his father flooding into mind unbidden. He downed his drink with a grimace and motioned to the bartender to refill his glass. The irony of his being posted to a warship wasn’t lost on him, and he had his reservations before accepting the commission. He had joined Starfleet to be an explorer, a trailblazer, not a warrior. It wasn’t that he was afraid, though Fear wasn’t a stranger to be sure. It was the thought of taking another life, the tragedy and finality of it. Everything they had been would ever be, gone in a searing ball of flame and shattered metal. Their screams and last thoughts swallowed by the silence of space.

He downed the glass again, the alcohol’s effect starting to take him as he motioned for another refill. With any luck, it would soon take away the ghosts in his mind….at least for a little while.

The Hyperion shuddered, disruptor fire glancing off her shields as she danced through the hail of fire. The battle was even more intense than the first firefight he’d been in just days before, but Eli found himself focused more on threats within the ship itself.

The area around the needle that had pierced the ‘Rions hull still glimmered in and out of function, the energy pull from the needle playing havoc with their internal systems. At the moment, nothing was functioning in the area. Sensors, force fields, intruder counter-measures, everything was off-line. They didn’t even have access to environmental systems, else he would have pumped the oxygen out to disable the intruding Gators.

Eli frowned as the thought flew through his mind unbidden. He was starting to sound like the Captain, whose harsh words and mannerisms regarding the Tzenkethi left a bad taste in Eli’s mouth. He understood that they were at war, but the Captains demeanor and opinions seemed borderline racist. Referring to the Tzenkethi as “Gators” seemed to incline that they were less sentient, animalistic, and therefore easier to kill. The thought didn’t sit well with him, but Eli pushed the concern down, he had more important things to do.

He rechecked the internal defenses and made sure to secure the areas around the effected sections, double checking the countermeasures. It was then that Rome issued a command that stopped him dead in his tracks, causing him to stare at his CO in shock.

“Jettison the section!”

Eli couldn’t believe what he’d just heard. He only hesitated a moment, but it seemed to stretch into infinity. Jettisoning the section would kill everyone in it, including the ship personnel that had been in the area when the needle hit. Ejecting the section was a last resort, and there were still options to explore before sentencing everyone in the section to a horrible death. Still, they were in serious trouble and little to no time to formulate a plan to deal with the intruders, who’s intention to eliminate them were clear.

Eli snapped out of his shock and brought up the ejection subroutine. He placed his hand above the activation system. One motion and dozens of Tzenkethi and even more Federation personnel would die. His heart pounded in his chest, making his blood roar in his ears. He had his orders…
