Plasma Torpedoes

Postby Andrew Rice » Thu Jun 25, 2015 1:48 am

Ilaihr was scrabblng around engineering; which echoed in different tongues as he coordinated the repairs of Atlantis. The air of the room would seem terrifyingly chaotic and discordant to an outsider, but with all hands on deck there was scarce space for any non engineers; who were all at ease with the pace of work inside. They hadn't long to repair the systems, but they world like a well oiled machine; as to be expected from the finest ship in the fleet.

In the time they had; a select group had refined the design of the plasma torpedoes they would be building so storage of them was safer. Most of the excess plasma had now been safely vented, but enough for them to make atleast fifty torpedoes; but not really that much plasma, giving tribute to the strain Atlantis must have been under near the end of this phase of battle. The team were simply waiting on Ilaihr.

He took a moment at a console and summoned the fleet quartermaster over the comm. "This is Lieutenant Ilaihr of the the USS Atlantis."
"Ah, Lieutenant." The Bolian replied cheerfully. "We were expecting your call. We recieved your request for empty torpedo casings."
"Ah you did? Excellent. What good news do you bring."
"Well... whether it's good news or bad news, we have news... we are transferring 22 casings."
"Only twenty two. We have a plasma supply for fifty."
"What can I say, other ships have got the idea, and so we need to have a fair share."
"Come now, at least make it a better more complete number. Make it twenty five!"
"Lieutenant, the transfer has been allocated."
"What does three more matter? Come now, it is only three. What can three be in the grand scheme."
"What...huh.... what does it mean to you?"
"I'm a fastidious old man. I like order. Go on...." He smiled suggestively. "Make it twenty five and I'll buy you a drink on top. Go on."
The Bolian quartermaster was taken aback and charmed, and was weak to the promise of a drink. "Ahhh. You pulled my leg." The console chirped as he typed the extra allocation. "25 five. And a drink. And only because you're blue!"
They both laughed, swapped farewell pleasantries and disconnected the comm.

Ilaihr turened to the team of four on plasma duty. "We have twenty five casings and enough plasma for fifty. You know what we must do?"
A Caitian walked past, chuckling. "Dump half of it?"
Ilaihr smiled. "Better! Dump some of it, and make the twenty five count!" He laughed like a mad scientist. Everyone else shaking their heads, with smirk before getting back to work.

Those plasma torpedoes came in handy - we used every damn one of them! Good work on the connections.

Sweet Chorus

Postby Andrew Rice » Thu Jul 09, 2015 12:09 am

Engineering was in absolute chaos; it was quiet, but it chaos nonetheless. The warp core lay dormant and dead, critically injured personnel were still being carried out, and the emergency repairs teams from Discovery were struggling to get to grips with the sheer amount of damage. A corner of engineering completely devoid of functional consoles had been reassigned as a work area for medics treating minor injuries; and there were alot. Ilaihr had passed up treatment numerous times already; totally adamant in his ancient stubbornness, nothing was going to stop him getting something working, not even his broken wrist.

Eventually Ilaihr was one of the last of Atlantis' own engineers still working in engineering, being replaced by emergency teams; everyone either injured or focusing on the multiple hull breaches. Weapons and shields were no longer required; which was good because the deflector dish and phaser arrays would need a complete overhaul and power lines to the torpedo bays were now fused. The sensor array was essentially charcoal, the impulse engines had exploded and even if they had warp power, there wasn't enough of the nacelles left to establish a field; even an unstable one. The only system that had any promise of working any time soon was the communications array.

Ilaihr was exhausted; his usual amiable disposition had been replaced by blunt and direct orders; not an anecdote in sight. After some tentative work, rerouting and redistributing power around the decks, siphoning any inch of excess; the comms array blinked on and off momentarily. He bit his tongue and looked over to the warp core, the heart of the ship.

"I know you're hurt my girl... but you need to wake up just a little bit." He rested his hand on the bulkheadd. "We need communications. We can't even speak to other crew members across the ship, let alone ship-to-ship or ship-to-fleet. Give me something. Life support is off in evacuated decks and sections, only pathways to major repair zones exist beyond the core zones. There must be power hiding somewhere. I need you to speak."

The panel started to light up, the comm array blinking on and off slowly. "Come on my dear, we're nearly to berth, just a little bit more."

It became more periodic, critical data packets were trickling in, power flowing in short burst. Noises started to come through, coughing out of the console in a garble. They started to become more coherent, the cacophony became voices; many saying hello checking if it was working, a few were attempts at hails and personal message transmissions. The console showing near stable power levels, and even a few green indications. It was still a bit cross connected, so using the newly established connection, he uplinked communications with that of the nearest vessel; slowly the noise began to die down as Discovery's comm array filtered some of the traffic.

He tapped his commbadge, with a smile. "Ladies and Gentleman; this is engineering, for the most part we have re-established communications. However, it is prudent to note that any personal communications between the fleet that may be sent will experience a delay, due to prioritisation issues; but on board comms should be free of such limitations. Thank you for listening; now Atlantis has her voice back." He ended the comm, thought perhaps it was a bit much, and smiled; resting on the bulkhead. "Thank you Atlantis; you honour me with your strength."

No sooner had he taken a breath of relief, a priority message flashed up on the screen with a medical flag. He answered it; only to be met by a short video message of Hamlet.

"Ilaihr, old friend. I haven't been able to reach you, so I stored this short message within a fleet communication buffer in the hopes it finds it way to you. I need your help.... it's Soule... his brother..."

Blast From The Past

Postby Andrew Rice » Wed Aug 12, 2015 11:18 pm

The midday suns were high in the sky and Ilaihr was spread out in a deck chair, sunbathing (or what passed for sunbathing for an Andorian) in his pin-striped suit. Beside him was a very conspicuous horga'hn, almost gleaming in the sunlight, hoping to attract some companionship.

"I hope that statue isn't for me, you dirty old bugger." Called a strong male voice from behind him.

It was voice he recognised, but older than the last time he'd heard it. "If you're offering company, then I suppose it is. Although, I was hoping for a beautiful young lady or a handsome young man, or both, or a few of each, to have it with." He called back, not turning around.

"Is that what you're calling it?" The voice replied, now hovering above Ilaihr.

Ilaihr now looked up at the figure; he had a dark bronze complexion, wispy white hair and a long but well kept beard, with gentle and olivine coloured eyes. He slowly stood up, not breaking eye contact, and the two men shared a brief scowl; until their expressions crumbled and smiles and laughter broke through. "Captain Yehezkel Shafir, as I live and breath."

Yehezkel pulled Ilaihr into an embrace, and they gave each other two greeting kisses on either cheek. "It's Admiral these days Captain. Its bledy good to see you old man."

"Ahahaha, I'm a lieutenant these days." He smiled at his old friend. "Congratulations, my boy"

"Thank you, only got the special pip last year. And I'm aware of you're occupational change. I was utterly floored when I heard. I said, there's no way the prestigious Captain Ilaihr would join the ranks of Starfleet, but here you are. But did you really have to start from scratch?"

"I called in a lot of favours just to be accepted into Starfleet, and I would have had to use them all to get a captaincy; it's best to keep a couple just in case. Besides, I have enjoyed my time progressing the ranks, although I am iffy about holidaying when I could be repairing he ship." He gestured to the chair next to his, and took a seat. "I get the sense this isn't a social call."

Yehezkel sat down. "Not entirely no. Not to say that it isn't nice to see you. And I thought it was just the excuse to steal a few days of vacation for my crew and I, before we run off on an exploration mission to deep space."

"A drink then, before you begin?" The old man lifted a shiny bottle.
"Yahweh! No. Half the galaxy knows not to drink with the likes of you."
Iliahr then retrieved his pipe and a cigar from his pocket. "A smoke then?"

The admiral looked over his shoulders. "I'll have a cigar. Just dont let my wife find out, eh?"
"Not that ditsy Trill you used hang about with on the Olympia?"
"Tricielle? No... Do you remember Pemaya?"
"Not Gul Cadan's daughter?
He nodded. "Tenth anniversary in two months."
Ilaihr's eyes lit up with joy. "How wonderous, I am so happy for you. Lordy, where does the time go?"

Yehezkel took the cigar cautiously and lit it, whilst Ilaihr fixed himself a pipe. "There's nothing funny in this, is there?" They both laughed with each other as the admiral decided he didn't want the answer.

"Shall we get down to the buisness that's brought you here then, old friend." He puffed his pipe, sagely.

"I saw bumped into your son the other day; Dan'el. He mentioned he hadn't spoken to you in quite some time."

"We had a disagreement a number of years ago... about Starfleet, what I've done with all my money and some of his ill advised decisions. His fiery Romulan temper and my foolish Andorian pride that was. I do hope he's all right."

"He's very good. Has his own ship; does runs between the Federation and the independent Romulan and Reman colonies. Its dangerous work out there, Klingon 'pirates' have been moving into the area lately."

"I heard the rumours. I'm sure he's tooled up for the region though."

"Indeed. He has the most heavily armed cargo ship I have ever seen. Has Tholl Grott and Groll Thott working for him too."

"He found the twins? Those Breen bastard's will keep him safe... he could become a pirate with those two." He laughed. "What of Adam and Kedra?"

Yehezkel suddenly became serious as he took a deep toke of the cigar. "Dan'el asked me to deliver a message about them. He said they are on the trail of Jinto."

Iliahr choked on his pipe, and spluttered smoke into the air. "They found him? Where is he? Is he alright?" He was suddenly very excited and anxious.

"He didn't go into details. But I got the sense that things were a little convoluted and complicated. What did Jinto get into? I remember him being a sweet and shy little Reman boy."

Ilaihr sighed, and deflated somewhat. "That's a long story..."

They sat back, puffing on their respective smoke, reflecting and discussing the past; catching up. Ilaihr enjoyed it immensely, not having caught up in with truly old friend in such a long time. However, the message secretly haunted him throughout the day. As he pondered the question: What did his son get into?
