Poor Vikram. I'll have someone prod him awake when we reach the station.

Great logs recently, Shawna!

A new promotion and a heaping helping of new responsibilities on top of that. Not all that much more than he'd been doing these past many heart-pounding days of the war, but now it was full time. Everyone had been congratulating him and giving him knowing looks of 'told you so'. He kept his bafflement to himself.

They were, after all, going to go on vacation. And a well-deserved one at that.

Still, he shot off a letter to Admiral Head, to update him that he was, in fact, still alive and well and had in a year managed to work up to XO. And gave the subtle hint that if Head had put anyone around to spy on him and report back, just to make sure he didn't crack like some of the others had, it was no longer necessary. There.

Certainly he'd had time off before, but...it wasn't something one got used to, back in 31. Not something very regular. And before that, he'd been mentally in the wrong place, and before that was Kensington... When was the last time, prior to Sentinel, that he'd had a proper, uneventful, genuinely relaxing shore leave? (Hell, had he even had one on this ship? Last time was pretty disastrous.) Once upon a time he'd been a social butterfly and was good enough at footy to make the team for a time in the Academy. Those days felt like entire lifetimes ago. Surely he'd be able to figure out what passed for fun when not cooped up on a ship, right?

I promise not to let anything untoward happen during shore leave. This time :colbert:

This shore leave is going to be so relaxing that your bones mysteriously disappear and you all have to slurp around the ship as a pile of skin!

Normally his downtime consists of eating, the gym, catching up on correspondences, watching newsfeeds, some reading maybe. And sure, he could do all of that here on Risa without even leaving the hotel. He could. But he supposes that isn't the point. He should do relaxing things that he doesn't have the chance to really do, even if, in theory, he could do whatever he wanted on a holodeck.

It gets him tense, having all of this free time. Paradoxical. He doesn't think he wants to be in the middle of a probably-going-to-die war again, no, but the last time he had an overabundance of free time was his year away from...just about everything that wasn't therapy.

Still, he can act like a normal person and enjoy himself. People watch at cafes, sitting outdoors and having overpriced but fully delicious pastries and steamy perfect coffee-like drinks. Jog down around the beach, go for a swim. At one point he makes it down to an area dedicated to various sporting events, a ball of approximately the right size and density, and a goal. See some of the nearby sights. He has to remind himself to enjoy it all while he can. And the crew, they more than deserve this break. God only knows how many people won't ever get the chance.

Stardate 11507.20

The news hits hard.

Those who aren't getting the feed in their hotel rooms crowd around in the lobby to take it in, some faces shocked, saddened, horrified, angry. Some are just passive or resigned. Vikram breathes slowly, steadily, in for a count, out for a count, arms crossed tight against his chest.

Someone did this. Someone did this deliberately.

He's not completely convinced it was Tzenkethi forces that did.

Oh, sure, it's likely, and he has a grudge against them collectively as anyone else does, the rogue forces who supposedly went against the Autarch. That those remaining would be against repairing relations, mending.

It's also likely that someone on the inside did this deliberately, not enjoying the President's actions and decisions in the wake of peace. He can acknowledge paranoia. But he's used to seeing the wider picture, the angles. The strings being pulled. That one of the cabinet members happened to survive: terrible burden of coincidence, or calculated plan? He has to look the Bolian up.

Vikram doesn't have the contacts he used to, but all he needs are public records, newspaper articles, quotes, to be able to see any patterns. Zothan Yix hasn't been President Okeg's most optimistic voice regarding deals with the Tzenkethi. Vikram can understand the desire for more security, more ships, more guns and military presence, but is that enough to want to take out everyone else who might have disagreed?

History has shown that leaders have been assassinated and replaced for less than that. He stares at the screen with ice forming in him. Better than fire, better than blowing his mouth off saying the wrong thing, going off without a plan. There's no plan he can make alone here. Could he, should he dare contact his old 31 partner? Surely they have better information than he does, put everything together faster than some new promotion on Risa. Unless they set this up to start...

His fist comes down on the desk with a solid thump.
