Vikram is...frustrated. Not at Gist; he will defend the man's actions. (He might have to ask, at some point, whether that phaser was set to stun, but for now he gives the officer the benefit of the doubt.) And as far as he's concerned currently, Nurna is telling as much truth as they're going to get out of her. Ferengi women have only in recent decades been gaining more rights; this one might not actually know more useful details. And the only detail that could help them currently is how to get out of here.

It just feels pointless is all. Is he losing his touch? Granted it's been a while since he's played good cop, but somewhere along the line, something should have cracked. (Note to self: maybe keep some latinum on him at all times?) The problem is how there's only so far they can go. Even if they were in the brig, away (blessedly) from the CMO and more importantly from sickbay, they are bound by certain regulations. Certain ethics that Section 31 chose to bend or ignore for the greater good. They could not harm her, at least not in any significant way. Not employ any telepathic intrusions. It limits their abilities, but it also makes them better people.

Which makes him wonder: what kind of person is he?

One last assault. He certainly hoped it would be worth it, throwing every force they had at the FOB the Tzenkethi made out of the debris of the station. Because if they lost, that would be it. Nobody powerful enough to stop an invasion force, save for a last minute miracle. Not that they had never pulled one of those out of their asses before. Or even repeatedly. But it was not wise to gamble on luck or fate with the lives of thousands and thousands and thousands of officers aboard countless ships. Even he was not so heartless. That they would apparently have Tzenkethi allies certainly sweetened the deal, but wouldn't this have been so much easier if it had merely been a civil war amongst the overgrown lizards, tearing themselves apart instead? What a waste. What a tragedy.

Maybe, somehow, when all of the space dust has settled, something good can come out of all of this senselessness. But he wasn't holding his breath.

"You need to get that nose looked after."

"It'll heal," growl-mumbled Vikram, trying very hard not to wipe at any of the still flowing or otherwise dried blood from when he smacked his face on an inconvenient console. That was what he got when he ran about the bridge instead of staying in one damned place, he supposed.

"Yeah, and it'll heal wrong, and then nobody's going to want to look at your ugly mug, sir," the medical ensign stressed, wrinkling her own piglike nose. Tellarites certainly had their charms. "Plus the damage might make smelling or breathing difficult."

"But the ugly part is more important?" he ventured with at least a bare trace of amusement.

"If you ignore the possibility of an infection making things even worse. We could always lop the thing off, sir. Might even be an improvement." If she waved that tricorder over his face one more time she might just lose that arm. "Sickbay's packed, so I can't suggest you go down there."

"Good."

"But I have to insist I treat you here."

"On the bridge?"

"No, I was hoping you'd invite me to your quarters for a more intimate time. Yes, here." She reached into her pack of supplies to get started on doing just that. "I don't have to tell you to sit still, do I, sir?"

He may have involuntarily leaned away, but he made like he was totally going to lean himself back in the seat to be more comfortable while she performed her duties. It could be worse. It could always be worse. He could've gotten something more serious and had to be trudged to sickbay. They could all be dead. So this was relatively minor. "No." Besides, he hated how...muffled he sounded what with his nose being completely out of place and everything. "You don't. Carry on, ensign."

He has to ignore injured crewmembers. It isn't out of coldness, merely necessity. If he allows himself to be distracted for anything other than an emergency, then he won't be effective.

"I repeat, this is Sentinel; we are out of the fight and being boarded." Taking care of dreadnaughts is one highlight, and while the loss of effectiveness from one ship alone won't impact the battle overall, it still feels as though they're losing. "Requesting someone keep an eye on our back while we deal with this infestation." It's all he can do right now to let the battle group know that until they've got power to more than just, say, life support, comms, and the bare basics, they're going to be sitting ducks. And now they have Tzenkethi climbing in through the new airlocks they just made courtesy of ramming their ships into the hull.

Wonderful. Part of him would like to share a fraction of Gist's enthusiasm, but as always, he should stay here. Coordinate. Multitask. Plan and route and reroute. First, get these bastards off of their ship. Then, get these bastards out of their space. Always easier said than done.

Stardate 11506.22

Battle for Our Lives
Asha Baudin

The battle of Sector 621 rages on with heavy casualties reported on both sides. All currently known reinforcements have been deployed to that area of space, and there has been a recent change in the tide thanks to new tactics and quick thinking from our Federation troops.

However, Federation leaders have been in serious talks behind closed doors at the Place. Inside sources suggest several contingency plans have been suggested in case the line falls to the unrelenting Tzenkethi forces. No official word yet as to what those plans might be, and the President has been keeping tight-lipped about anything other than encouraging words of hope and thanks to the Tzenkethi Autarch's loyal forces helping in the fight.

Military experts from around the globe and beyond have suggested that nothing short of an evacuation would be appropriate in the wake of a Tzenkethi strike given their reported tenacity and the devastation they have already left behind. There is hope that a civil war would help to divert the hostile force and allow us more time to prepare and rebuild.

Until the space dust has settled, there can be no knowing who will win this war or what the outcome will be. A tentative list of unaccounted for or destroyed ships is listed here, but please not that this list is subject to change, and for any official news, a Starfleet officer will be in contact with you. Whatever the outcome, we will make sure you are the first to know.

Our hopes and prayers go out to the fleet standing between us and destruction once more.

There was too much to be done to just relax. The fight might be over (for now), but the ship was barely hanging on, and the crew along with her. Vikram made certain that of all the bridge crew, he was the last to be looked at by medical teams. Coordinating efforts offered from other ships to pick off any stragglers and tow her away. Then the sheer amount of information from every station and every deck, damages, early casualty reports, this is offline, that is busted, fire suppression, and dear every god above, keep the shields and forcefields around the hull breaches functional. Estimates for recovery, even under the best circumstances were not happy numbers.

He flexed his hand, and the nurse gave him a grumpy look as she tended to his minor burns from his literally exploded console and briefly alight sleeve. The smoke inhalation hadn't been bad; his one lung was pretty good at sorting through everything awful it needed to, but his original lung was not always in such tip-top shape. He insisted he would be fine. A little rest. Once everything was settled and taken care of. Once he knew where they were going and where everyone was and had everything coordinated. Then he could rest.

After being told he was pushing himself, and how long had it been since he had slept anyway, and don't give me that 'sleep when I'm dead' crap, he made a compromise to let the nurse finish up, then he would go to his quarters and rest for a few hours. Probably. Maybe.

The moment he could, he left for his quarters and strode over to his desk, pulling up a number of files he'd been going over before that final assault. Each one a letter of note, something to be sent out in case of warp core failure or the order to abandon ship. He glanced over each one before deleting them from the computer. No longer necessary.

A shower, then, to clean off the sweat and soot and smoke. And when he hit the bed, he was out almost instantly. Maybe he ought to listen to the medical staff just a little bit more.
