ENG Ensign Taev

This is a Forum-Only Station. Do you have an inactive character that you want to write about? Is your character being transferred somewhere else, or fresh out of the Academy? This is where you write logs or start something creative with your fellow players either on Spacedock, orbiting Earth, or elsewhere in the STE universe.

ya know… there should be a setup for force fields around each biobed…. you should probably use that ; )

Entanglements

Flashing orange, green, and yellow lights cast discordant glows off the work console. Acrid fumes linger in Main Engineering while the humming of the warp core reverberate in an allegretto cadence. Crewman Bicker’s words echoed in his head. “She’s rigging the Starbase to self-destruct”.

Sigh.

The long range scatter-fire from the defensive Tzenkethi positions trigger a lot of nuisance alarms, but can’t do more than provide a light-show for anyone looking out a viewport. The USS Sentinel has more phaser capacity available than God, and we’re doing scuttle duty. Again.

I suppose we’ll need the Quantum Slipstream Drive again soon.

Looking at the QSD Relay doubtfully, Taev thought about the Federation’s approach to QSD safety. The Relay in question was about the size of a sonic shower. Plasma energy was fed by twin conduits into the rear access port. High voltage electrical connectionss were accessed and controlled by an ODN bypass along the top cabinet. Entangled Quantum State particles were housed in an ultra-high vacuum system with its associated pumps and lasers. The beauty of the system was that the Relay could be anywhere and still drive the QSD. Entangled particles within the housing can switch on and off the drive from across the Galaxy if need be. Maintaining the particles and manipulating them correctly was the beastly part of it.

I could shut down the unit, pull out the broken fans, sliced tubing, and shorted contacts. The lasers could be re-aligned, the cabinet straightened out. But the Quantum state particles would need to re-establish entanglement and in the correct order before the Relay could be of any use. That would mean entangling fresh Quarks from the QSD drive unit and coaxing their partners into their new home. Of course, entangling sub-atomic particles needs a very stable, quiet environment.

Maybe if I put the QSD relay and the QSD’s Quark Repository Module (QRM) in a Shuttle and free-drifted in the shuttle-bay, I’d have a shot at it.

Guidance Computers

Travel to Kobliad has been a sheer joy. It’s not often that an Engineering Ensign gets to rebuild a torpedo guidance computer! With all the burnt relays and shattered consoles, overloaded plasma conduits, and such, there’s none of that wasted time sitting around “off hours” trying to fit in. Then, all that pressure to be perfect in front of our Captain (with whom I can’t decide to love or hate) is on hiatus. My favorite bridge officer, Vikram, is in command. Vikram likes things organized and clean, answers my questions, and seems to watch my back.

But the Guidance system, it is a beauty. It’s like a Lernaean Hydra in redundancy. I guess the Federation must be paranoid to know where their photon torpedoes go. If one sub-processing unit goes down, a parallel sub-unit will split computation tasks into 2 even bundles of cores. Telemetry, Sensor data filtration, data encryption and decryption, recognition codes, stellar cartography & ship data sets, yield safety ranges, torpedo performance characteristics & optimization, path evasion & penetration algorithms, the list is ENDLESS!

A layman might not understand why it is big deal to fix a broken computer. But, it’s like being given the keys to your dad’s top secret security file cabinet with all the liquor, his medical records, marriage counseling tapes, phaser, and porn collection all inside. And that cabinet was made by the brightest minds in the Galaxy, sparing no expense.

So, I’ve been sending Crewman Bickers running around ragged fixing the easy stuff. Then I do the complex field work on my regular time, then spend the double-shift repairing the torpedo guidance computer. The physical replacement parts were in inventory and relatively easy to install. But the software validation has been time consuming. It is a logical step-by-step series of debugging with a lot of the work chasing down corrupted files, verifying functionality of basic root-level commands like:

Transfer control
Count, compare & skip
Index
Resume
Exchange
Clear and subtract
Transfer to storage
Add
Mask
Multiply
Divide
Subtract

In truth, when we reach Kobliad the computer won’t be 100%. I’d give it 80-90% functionality. But I’m learning a lot and will have some recommendations for some tweaks after we get a chance.

Standing at Medbay’s doors, flowers hanging limply from fallen wrist, Taev looks forlornly into the quieting room. If only Crewman Bickers had told him earlier that a lovely Vulcan was on-board. Tears, anger, then the words came unbidden to his lips:

Requiem for Sa’tel

Jolan Tru,

Grant Sa’tel glory,
and let perpetual light shine on her.
You are praised, Al’thindor,
and homage will be paid to You.
Hear my prayer,
to You all flesh will come.
Grant her but fleeting rest, Lord,
to rise with you in light & flames.

Day of wrath, day of anger
will dissolve our worlds in ashes,
as foretold by D’era.
Great trembling there will be
when you rise from Ashes
to examine all things closely.

The Horn will send its wondrous sound
throughout the land's sepulchres
and gather all before thee.
Death and nature will be astounded,
when all creation rises again,
to answer your cry.
A book will be brought forth,
in which all will be written, again,
by which the glorious will be praised.
When Al’thindor takes his place,
what is hidden will be revealed,
nothing will remain unavenged.
What shall a soul like me say?
Thine arts by Honor’s way shall confide.

When the weak are confounded,
and doomed to flames of woe,
call me among the wise and strong.
I clasp with fulsome heart to thee,
my contrition is like thine ashes,
help me in my grief and loss.

Know that day of tears and mourning shall pass,
when from the ashes you shall arise, and
all peoples we shall lead in honor and glory

Amen.
